UN Sustainable Development Goals

Through its impact driven business model, #tide is working towards a more sustainable world on many different levels. The UN SDGs act as a framework for us to measure and prioritize impact. These are the goals we're focussing our efforts on.

    Creating jobs

The collection of our plastic as well as the pre-processing is done in close partnership with social enterprises. Together we make sure to create jobs, provide job training, pay fair wages and in some instances also provide housing. Giving waste a value first and foremost means to improve livelihoods of the people and communities at the forefront of this issue.

    Empowering local communities

Our relationships with local organizations and communities are built to last. Long-term commitments increase the resilience of our eco-system. Job Training and educational programs for school children help to raise awareness and function to empower communities.

    Waste management

Cleaning up the ocean and the coastal areas is fine. But to solve plastic pollution for good, waste management infrastructures need be built. Together with our collectors, we invest in warehouses, collection hubs, and logistics to create solutions that will work and last for decades.

    Going circular

In the long run, plastic pollution will only be solved by a complete transition towards a circular economy. With our products and services, we help brands and manufacturers to accelerate transitional processes.

    Reduce plastic production

There is enough plastic in the world already. No need to consume additional fossil resources to produce new plastic. Instead we can just use what already exists. Recycling plastic causes significantly less carbon emissions than the production of virgin plastics.

    Ocean clean-up

Taking plastic waste out of the water and from the coastal areas improves water quality and underwater habitats. It also reduces the risk of getting entangled or suffocated for all the creatures who live there. In the long run and on a large scale, preventing plastic polluting the ocean will also help to decrease contamination with microplastics.

Lifecycle assessment

The first step of reducing your own CO2 footprint is knowing how much emissions you cause. In June 2022 we have had our #tide ocean material® independently analyzed by recognized third party Carbotech, an environmental consultancy based in Switzerland. Brands and manufacturers using our granules therefore know exactly in what ways replacing virgin plastic with #tide ocean material will affect their footprint.

Key LCA-Findings

  • 80%

Using #tide ocean material® instead of virgin plastic saves 80% of CO2-emissions.

  • 50%

Compared to regular recycled PET from the EU-market, #tide ocean material® still produces only half the climate impact.

  • 35

The factor by which the benefits of removing the plastic from the environment outweigh the climate impact of #tide ocean material®.

Carbon offsetting

Running a global supply-chain for upcycled ocean-bound plastic by nature involves a significant amount of logistics and transportation. We always try to minimize shipping – our strategy is to serve markets with regionalized supply-chains, the plastic ideally is processed close to the source.

But there are transports we can't avoid. To offset those greenhouse gas emissions, we have established a partnership with the Swiss non-profit myclimate. They are one of the world leaders in voluntary CO2-compensation measures. myclimate invests in climate protection projects all around the globe. Among other things, they support forestation efforts or coral reef restoration.
