
In the fall of 2023 the Danish manufacturer of high-end textiles, Kvadrat made waves: They released "Sport", the world's first upholstery fabric made from 100% ocean-bound plastic. The recycled polyester yarn for Sport is provided by #tide and was turned into a beautiful line of textiles by Milan-based designer Patricia Urquiola.
And now "Wallpaper*" the self proclaimed "global design authority" is recognizing the pioneering collaboration between #tide, Kvadrat and Urquiola. Sport is named "Best Recyled Material" at the Wallpaper* Design Award 2024, the annual celebration of cutting edge innovation and bold ideas in the global creative community. All the other winners are publicly announced in the February print issue of Wallpaper*.
In an article published online ahead of the official print release, Wallpaper* highlights the design and materiality of the fabric, praising it "high-tech aesthetic" and "subtle tactile patterns". The author also points out the pioneering spirit of using recycled polyester yarn sourced from the coastline for a premium upholstery fabric:
"With Sport, Kvadrat and Urquiola affirm their commitment to innovation in design, as they constantly push the boundaries of domestic design to set the tone for future living."
